Though Golden Gyros Fine Greek Food (611 N. Union Blvd., 633-0707) only opened March 1, there's a good chance you've already tried owner Nik Hashemi's food. This is the Kurdistan native's fourth eatery here, dating back to a 1984 venture inside Citadel Mall, followed by Greek Grill on Austin Bluffs Parkway and Grand Gyros on Palmer Park Boulevard. (The latter two he sold, but remain open today.)
When Hashemi learned the former Taco Bell was for sale, he jumped at the opportunity to own, rather than rent, his own place. To be unique, he's left the drive-through open.
Golden Gyros features more vegetarian items than his former outfits, catering to the Olympic Training Center and Memorial Hospital contingent, though his bestselling gyros with house tzatziki are of course available. All but the gyro cones (from Kronos or Devanco), is made on site, to-order, including the spanakopita and falafel. Other highlights, he says: spiced French fries, saffron Persian rice and flame-cooked chicken skewers.

According to owner Liz Rosenbaum, opening a sit-down location just a year after getting a food truck on the road was all part of her business plan.
Though Her Story Cafe (herstorycafe.com) will remain on four wheels, it's creating a home base at 2356 S. Academy Blvd., in Sabores del Peru's former location; tentative opening date, April 17. Between roughly 6 a.m. and 2 p.m. (also tentative), Tuesdays through Saturdays, Rosenbaum will serve unique breakfast sandwiches, followed by a lunch menu of sandwiches, soups and such.
Those breakfast sandwiches will likely comprise a choice of various breads, cheeses and meats with a scrambled egg and Rosenbaum's popular "peppy sauce" (cream cheese and bell peppers) or "sassy sauce" (an orange-marmalade-and-mustard mix). She also envisions a deal in which one drops in on the way to work for Colorado Coffee Merchants coffee, an Old German Bakery pastry and a to-go sack lunch for around $10.
À la carte
• Local caterer and cooking class operator Tinta de Toro (2521 W. Colorado Ave., tintadetoro.net) recently opened a baked-goods kiosk inside of the Plaza of the Rockies building (111 S. Tejon St.). From 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, you'll find items like monkey bread, lemon-poppy scones and raspberry-almond croissants.
• Auction House 109 (109 S. Sierra Madre St., auctionhouse109.com) will host the Little London Market — an outdoor antique and artisan market with specialty food vendors — second Saturdays, May through October. But it's planning a third business element, too: The Loading Dock, pending its liquor license, aims to serve wine and beer with light tapas, from 4 to 9 p.m., Thursdays through Saturdays, during summertime.
