North End Bistro
"If we don't move, we'll become extinct."
That's Jackie Houston, explaining her decision to uproot the 55-year-old North End Diner — which she's owned for the last 20 — from 3005 N. Hancock Ave., and merge it with her other nearby restaurant, The Bistro (1228 E. Fillmore St., northenddiner.com). Houston says business at the diner has been tough, with nearby construction closing roads and cutting off access for key clientele. Plus, the building needs a costly total renovation, she says.
The diner's relocation should happen within the month, and Houston says its full menu will transfer, with popular Bistro plates like the crab cakes and chicken-and-waffles also staying put. She'll still offer a free meal on your birthday plus popular deals like BOGO-for-a-nickel burgers.
Ranch Foods connect
The Ranch Foods Direct market at 2901 N. El Paso St. now sports a new occupant in its parking lot: the Good News Foods (650-0351) trailer.
Owner Eric Preston buys all his ingredients from RFD and its sub-vendors, items like Callicrate Beef burgers, hot dogs and Bristol beer brats, and Old German Bakery buns, potato salad and sauerkraut. He'll also procure local produce in season. And his menu includes items like Philly cheese steaks and foot-long dogs, while meals (around $6) come with hand-cut French fries (cooked in tallow) plus a drink.
Preston, 32 and a Le Cordon Bleu graduate, was the original chef at Woodland Park's Tabeguache Steakhouse, where he befriended the RFD folks nearly a decade ago. A common story: He says he's always wanted his own place, and a mobile unit is the cheapest way to do it.
Look for him daily but for Sundays from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with possible breakfast hours coming soon. He'll also be vending at large community events.
• The Colorado Senate recently recognized former Gazette and current Denver Business Journal reporter Ed Sealover by playfully declaring May 8 Ed Sealover Craft Beer in Colorado Day. That honor comes in tandem with the news that Sealover's Colorado Brews (whose pilot aired on April 6) has been picked up by Rocky Mountain PBS for a 13-episode season. The show could launch any time between September and January, depending on sponsorship and filming.
• Colorado Wine Week (winecolorado.org) runs through June 8 with events statewide. Locally, the Famous, TAPAteria, Edelweiss and the Warehouse are offering "Sips and Snacks," featuring an appetizer and glass of Colorado wine in the $15 to $20 range.
