Juicing the wheels
If it seems that mobile food businesses are turning up everywhere, it's driven (no pun intended) by the economy and a lower-risk investment, according to most of the vendors with whom I've spoken over the last few months.
The latest mobile hopeful to hit my radar is five-week-old Nourish Organic Juice (nourishorganicjuice.com), a juice bar and smoothie fixer that uses all organic fruits and vegetables, in addition to natural sweetener (stevia) and non-dairy bases (coconut and almond milk). More to like: compostable cups, lids and straws, and a 50-cent discount for bringing your own cup.
Owner Evelyn Steel says she's been juicing for more than five years, and for her menu, she and business partner Nicole Martinez tried to devise interesting combos such as the Green Dragon, made with pineapple, cucumber, wheatgrass, ginger and mint. Her smoothies include creative concoctions like the Love Expanding, made with spinach, strawberry, goji berries, cacao nibs, chia seeds, almond butter, coconut milk and stevia. Juices vary from around $5 to $6.50 for 16 ounces, and smoothies range from around $5.50 to $6.50 for 20 ounces.
"I try not to make my drinks too sugary," says Steel, a former stay-at-home mom who ran an eBay business while working toward a masters degree in holistic nutrition. "I think it's detrimental to our health."

Following on the wheels of cupcake ventures in cities nationwide (and the Springs Cupcake Truck locally), three-week-old Cupcake Girls (650-2495) has devised a unique plan to distinguish itself: delivering cupcakes to your door.
Owners Lisa Potts and Andrea Fleischmann envisioned the business nearly a year ago and have spent the past six months creating "eight really solid flavors" like the Serve With Champagne, described on Cupcake Girls' Facebook page as "an indulgent devil's food chocolate cupcake baked with a hint of chambord liquor and infused with juice from fresh raspberries, topped with rich chocolate frosting garnished with chocolate shavings and finished with a fresh raspberry on top."
The Girls bake out of a cooperative kitchen locally, and they've built the delivery cost into the cupcake pricing: $18 for a half dozen and $33 for a full dozen. Orders need to be placed one to two days in advance.
Potts says she uses real ingredients, and that rather than aiming for "crazy" cupcake flavors, she's gone for "really yummy flavors."
"A cupcake needs to be a treat," she says. "It's an indulgence."
