Year of the yogurt
The crepe craze of 2009-10 appears to have ended — with no recent openings and two creperie closures — so let the self-serve frozen yogurt fad of 2011 begin. Or continue, actually.
We told you about YoYogurt and iTopIt's openings back in late February. Now get ready for Lulu's Frozen Yogurt (9475 Briar Village Point, #152, lulusyogurt.com), tentatively set to open May 18 with a grand opening June 4.
Longtime Springs residents Teri and Larry Lucero are behind the venture, inspired by shops they saw in Phoenix while visiting two of their daughters at college. Lulu's, Teri says, will have 16 rotating yogurt flavors and around 60 toppings. She adds that she's aware of the other self-serve outfits, as well as a Pinkberry franchise opening soon at Woodmen Road and Academy Boulevard. But she's aiming to distinguish Lulu's by giving 8 percent of profits back to local school programs and charities like the March of Dimes (who'll benefit from the grand opening).
Menudo and more
Named for the Chihuahuan city from which the Baeza family hails, Puerto Palomas Mexican Restaurant (578-7845) opened last Friday at 208 N. Union Blvd. (the former Cubanacan and Bobbi's spot). Owner Carlos Baeza, who also helps run AB Painting & Drywall, says his mother does the cooking from scratch with family recipes.
He calls the menu a standard Mexican offering, with carne asada, fajitas, rellenos, tamales and the like, including breakfast burritos and egg dishes available all day. The outfit is open for all meals daily, and serves special menudo (beef stomach soup), posole (pork stew) and barbacoa plates on weekends.
New Palace guard
Having come under new ownership in early 2010, India Palace (5644 N. Academy Blvd., 535-9196) once again changed owners this past February. The Springs-raised co-owner of the new regime, Rag Kumar, says his mother does the cooking and has previously cooked at outfits like Taste of India. The new menu features a Northern Indian style with more meat dishes, says Rag, though vegetarian options still abound. Hours, including those for the lunch buffet, run daily.
In late March, Broadway Deli closed its 7170 N. Academy Blvd. location after 10 years in business. The new location at 4475 Northpark Drive remains in operation, though owner Eric Velasquez says a move was never the plan. After weathering the recession, he blames the construction at Woodmen Road and Academy Boulevard for forcing his hand.
