Culinary crumbs and gastronomic gossip

Make way for a newbie

The newly renovated Colorado Springs Marriott (5580 Tech Center Drive) will hold an official grand opening in late fall for Zebulon's Grille and Tequileria. A new menu will feature Southwestern-style cuisine.

Joseph Westley, former executive chef for the Colorado Springs Marriott restaurants, will oversee the venture, which will be open to the public. Westley is an American Culinary Federation-certified chef with 10 years' experience in hospitality/food service.

According to director of sales and marketing Lyn Arguello, the tequileria, in addition to serving common drinks, will specialize in a variety of Colorado beers and flavored tequilas. Call 268-4218 for more.

Off to Northern Italy

Pete Moreno will prepare five courses of gourmet Italian food, paired with wines from the Veneto and Piedmont regions, for the "Summer in Northern Italy" wine dinner at 7 p.m. on Aug. 21 at MacKenzie's Chop House (128 S. Tejon St.). Fare includes prosciutto with Gorgonzola-stuffed fig and walnuts, and "Mascarpone Budino" with rhubarb and strawberry marmalade and mint syrup. Yeah twist my arm. The price, not counting gratuity and tax, is $85. Call 444-8400.

And now for something Spanish

Jake & Telly's Greek Cuisine and Wine Bar (2616 W. Colorado Ave.) is hosting a six-course, six-wine Spanish wine tasting dinner at 7 p.m. on Aug. 23. The price, sans gratuity and tax, is $60. Call 633-0406.

More than drum rolls

Thursday nights at Cedars Jazz Club at Paragon Culinary School (3125 Sinton Road) now offer an interesting mix: sushi and eclectic music spun by a local DJ. From 6 to 10, chef Victor Matthews will serve rolls from $7.50 to $9.50. The Bourbon Street Roll features spicy crawfish, avocado and artichoke with Tabasco and wasabi aioli; the Dean's Roll, tempura shrimp, spicy crab, avocado, eel sauce and Sriracha mayo. Call 578-5744 for more.

Now that's a movie experience

Kimball's Twin Peak Theater (115 E. Pikes Peak Ave.) recently obtained a full liquor license that allows it to serve martinis, cocktails and mixed drinks in addition to beer and wine. Expect a full drink menu by month's end. Call 447-1947 for more.
