Pick your own
If you've never pulled your apples from the trees, and you're keen on $1-a-pound pricing a good deal compared to most grocery-store prices drive to Third Street Apples (935 Third St., Penrose) sometime before Halloween. The orchard grows nearly 50 varieties of apples and also sells syrups, jellies, pumpkins-by-the-pound (45 cents), local honey and an assortment of vegetables.

Third Street is open 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day but Tuesday, and also runs a fruit stand on the weekends at Coyote Coffee Den (U.S. Highway 115 and Sixth Street, Penrose), my favorite southern daytrip pit stop. If you schedule your apple-picking on Oct. 6, you'll catch Penrose Apple Day, featuring a parade, free apple pie at noon and vendors all day. Call 719/372-6283 for more.
A taste of Paonia
The eighth annual Mountain Harvest Festival, held throughout Paonia, will feature a variety of food-related events and activities alongside diverse music from Sept. 28-30. Set in the North Fork Valley region, known for its peaches, organic farms, ranches and vineyards, the weekend festival includes a chili cook-off, homemade pie contest, a pub crawl, winery tours and much more.
