By mid-month, downtown's East Bijou Street will be the unrivaled mecca for Middle Eastern cuisine in Colorado Springs. After fewer than eight months in business, Heart of Jerusalem Caf (906 Manitou Ave., #100, Manitou Springs) is opening a second location at 15 E. Bijou St. Across the street sit both the Pita Pit and Persian Grille.
Owner Hussein Abukhdeir, who originally wanted to set up shop inside CC's Spencer Center, says he's glad to be close to the students downtown. And he's confident the from-scratch recipes that have won his Manitou customers over will fare well against the competition.
"We feel very good," he says. "People are happy about us."

A new pizza place, New York Pizza Development (NYPD) Pizza, has opened on the northeast end of town at 4359 Integrity Point (intersection of Barnes Road and Powers Boulevard). During November, the Orlando, Fla.-based, locally owned franchise is offering a $.99 pizza-slice special. NYPD claims to serve authentic New York-style pizza in addition to apps, salads, calzones, strombolis, hot hero sandwiches and desserts.
