Gentle Strength Wellness Education & Herb Shop (4831 Barnes Road) is celebrating the winter solstice with an open house from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 29. Guests can enjoy free snacks, herbal teas and chai, as well as free counseling, body work and giveaways.
The new shop, opened by annual Colorado Springs Herb Fest organizer Sharon Schulman, sells more than 100 medicinal and cooking herbs and spices (including hard-to-find ones), as well as loose-leaf and bagged teas, green and superfoods, liquid extracts and nutritional and herbal supplements.

Heart of Jerusalem Caf Authentic Middle Eastern Cuisine is now open in its second location at 15 E. Bijou St. Owner Hussein Abu-Khdeir has launched a few new items since his early days in Manitou, including a "chikofel" sandwich (mixing falafel and chicken breast), a "papaganooj" side (eggplant, tahini, garlic and olive-oil dip) and a variety of baklava styles for dessert. Taco Star opened recently in the former Arby's location at 318 N. Wahsatch Ave. oddly enough, diagonally across the intersection from a well-established Taco Bell. The battle for Palmer High palates should be spirited. Call 391-5829 for more.
Euro Mart and Deli opened roughly two months ago at 4839 Barnes Road (the corner of Oro Blanco). The operation is open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., offering goods from all over Europe from Bulgaria to Slovakia and many more countries. Call 550-4840 for more.
Reuben's Fusion opened in early November at 925 S. Eighth St. The menu is focused on Mexican, Italian and "meat" offerings, each with its own extensive as in appetizers, soups, salads and desserts page on the menu.
