Let there be hibachi

Fujiyama will introduce hibachi-style cooking (traditionally called teppanyaki) in mid-May when it relocates two doors north of its current location at 28 S. Tejon St., according to owner Minji Suh. The new venue, last the home to Seabel's Gourmet Shop, will double Fujiyama's seating capacity and also will incorporate a separate bar area in the front window and sushi bar toward the back.

For those not familiar with hibachi, the technique involves cooking on a large hotplate that guests sit around, while the chef cooks and performs knife and fire tricks. Suh has hired a chef from Arizona with 25 years of hibachi experience to lead the new operation.

In addition to the hibachi menu, Suh says to expect new "small bite appetizers" at the bar, along with sake flights, green tea martinis and saketinis. Also look for new lunch specials, incorporating such dishes as a traditional Korean stone rice bowl ($9.99), a combination of vegetables, rice and sliced beef topped with a fried egg served in a rock bowl.

Suh says Fujiyama will close for two weeks prior to the new opening in order to make the physical move. Call 630-1167 for more.

Firkin delicious

The Colorado Brewer's Guild, comprised of 49 independent state breweries, will host its fourth annual Firkin Rendezvous from 1 to 5 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 23, at Bristol Brewing Co. (1647 S. Tejon St.). Your $30 ($25 in advance) purchases a souvenir tasting glass, food and samples of traditional English-style cask ales. Call 633-2555 or visit coloradobeer.org for more.

Take note
The 23rd annual Chef's Gala Feast and Culinary Competition is set for 5 p.m., Feb. 24, in The Broadmoor's Rocky Mountain Ballroom. Tickets to sample elaborate and extravagant appetizers, entres and desserts from two dozen of our finest local chefs are $100 each and go to support The Colorado Springs Chorale. Call 634-3737 or visit cschorale.org for more.

Good news for attendees to Colorado College hockey games and other World Arena (3185 Venetucci Blvd.) events: the venue has recently added tasty and eco-friendly New Belgium beers, including Fat Tire, to its beer offerings.
