Culinary crumbs and gastronomic gossip

A trip off the plank

Aaaargh! Call it the result of being under the influence of grog and dazzled by pirate booty: In the April 10 Appetite column "Faded Feathers," we noted Uwe's Restaurant (31 Iowa St.) was "now closed." All you Uwe lovers out there can stop clutching your chests: The restaurant, though recently shuttered for a two-week vacation, is not permanently closed.

Diners can still, in the words of one reader who caught our mistake, "enjoy one of the best schnitzels this side of Wiesbaden" from 11 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. for lunch and 5:30 to 8 p.m. for dinner, Tuesday through Saturday.

Our apologies for the error.

Change of Heart

Rather than comply with eviction orders that would have had him out of his 906 Manitou Ave. location last week, Heart of Jerusalem owner Hussein Abukhdeir has decided to "fight back" by sticking around and reopening for business.

"When you've got six kids and you might lose your job, you've gotta find another way," he says.

Abukhdeir, getting the boot because of a neighboring loft owner's complaint about his restaurant's cooking smells, says that by law he can't be evicted without a court order. This past weekend, he was compelled by the nice weather to reopen the shop and get revenue flowing again. On both Saturday and Sunday, Manitou residents kept the restaurant busy.

When Abukhdeir gets his eviction notice, Heart of Jerusalem will relocate across the street to The Tiny House building (919 Manitou Ave.). Abukhdeir says it's possible he could stay open in the old space as long as a month.

The grapes of mirth

The 17th annual Wine Festival of Colorado Springs, put on by the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, will take place across various local venues April 18-19 and feature more than 300 wines. This year's feature is wines from Sonoma Valley, which will be highlighted in seminars and tastings led by winemakers from the region and master sommeliers.

Classes and a gourmet dinner range from $30 to $175 and require reservations, while Friday's 7 p.m. Grand Tasting & Wine Market Auction ($65-$70) at The Broadmoor (1 Lake Ave.) allows walk-ins and makes for a very fun (and wine-soaked) night. Visit csfineartscenter.org/winefest08.asp for more or call 634-5583 to make reservations. Compiled by Matthew Schniper and Monika Mitchell Randall

  • Our bad: Uwe's is not closed.
