Culinary crumbs and gastronomic gossip

Let there be lunch
Fratelli Ristorante Italiano (124 N. Nevada Ave.), now in its 13th year in business in the Springs, has decided to bring back lunch service from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Friday, after a five-year hiatus. Manager Kym Palomba says the decision was partly personal, partly by customer demand and partly opportunistic, as downtown continues to get busier due to citywide events and the upcoming move of the USOC headquarters.

The new menu (with prices hovering around $7 to $10) incorporates new items, such as an organic greens and shrimp salad, a basil pesto Genovese and pollo parmesiano (chicken breast), in addition to favorites like bruschetta and mozzarella appetizers. Also, desserts and special drinks such as a limoncello martini are available. Call 575-9571 or visit fratelliristorante.com for more.

As part of the revamped offerings at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, including the new Caf 36, Serranos Coffee has started offering light dining fare in the Deco Lounge from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. According to owner Alaine Nolt, the Monument-based company will offer "quick lunches," made up by Garden of the Gods Gourmet, who also runs the neighboring caf. Call 477-4377 or 481-9445 for more.

Take note
Pizzeria Rustica recently opened at 2527 W. Colorado Ave. Refreshingly, the pizzas are to incorporate organic and sustainably farmed food "wherever possible" as well as local farmers market products. Call 632-8121 or visit pizzeriarustica.com for more.

Arabica Caf just opened in the former space of Wild Wings 'n Things at 12 S. Tejon St. The menu, consisting of authentic-style sliced meat shawarmas (as opposed to compacted, processed meats), falafel, kababs, hummus plates and more, bills itself as "healthy Middle Eastern fast food." Call 471-2444 or visit cravearabica.com for more.

Joseph's has opened in the "revolving restaurant location" (1606 S. Eighth St.) that was formerly home to Mr. Steak, Marigold, Walter's, La Creperie and La Belle Vie. The new place is billed as "fine dining in a casual atmosphere," with lunches ranging $8.99 to $13.99 and dinners ranging $18.99 to $34.99. Call 630-3631 for more.

Sodexho will soon be replaced as the food-service provider at Colorado College by Bon Appetit Management, a company that's praised for its social responsibility and cooperation with local farmers. In a Ranch Foods Direct newsletter, cattleman Mike Callicrate calls Bon Appetit "authentic to the core."
