Fire extinguisher

After just over a year in business, Flame Throwers Nuevo Mex Grill has parted ways with its host venue, Benny's. "We are a family-oriented restaurant," says owner Patrick Bach, "and Benny's wasn't the fit."

After closing Dec. 29, Bach began looking for an investor to help open a new, stand-alone space in town. "But if need be," he says, "we might move to Denver or another state to open." He's willing to hang out a couple months to see what options emerge.

For the uninitiated, Bach and his wife Dorothy served up authentic, from-scratch, New Mexican-style dishes, accented with chilis from his family's farm in New Mexico. The taste proved truly unique to Colorado Springs.

Revelation revolution

The Winery at Holy Cross Abbey (3011 E. U.S. Hwy. 50, Cañon City) just released 126 cases of what winemaker Matt Cookson calls "one of the finest wines ever produced" by the company. Aptly, this coveted little goodie goes by "Revelation." Here's its reveal: The grapes behind the 2006 vintage, oak-aged blend of 35 percent Merlot, 35 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and 30 percent Cabernet Franc were cultivated at Palisade's Talbott Farms. The Deco Lounge inside the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center (30 W. Dale St.), operated by Garden of the Gods Gourmet, launches a new "Tapas 'n Jazz" venture Thursday, Jan. 8. Regular drink and food service, with sporadic live jazz, goes from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., Thursdays through Saturdays. Call 477-4377.

The Blue Star (1645 S. Tejon St.) released a new dining room menu Wednesday; join its e-mail list at thebluestar.net to receive a buy-one-get-one-entre deal good for Tuesdays in January.

The IRC (Independent Restaurant Cooperative) will host six wine-paired courses from member restaurants at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 13, at Edelweiss (34 E. Ramona Ave.). Seats are $60 plus tax/tip; call 633-2220 for reservations.

Brent Beavers, once famous locally for his cream of mushroom soup, will host an "All About Soups" cooking class from 3 to 5:30 p.m., Jan. 18, at the Village at Skyline (2365 Patriot Heights). He'll follow up with romantic, Mexican, Italian and appetizer classes (all $35 each) through March. Call 867-4639 for reservations.

In international news: Chipotle recently announced it expects to open its first London location later this year, with a goal to expand through Europe. Also, the company hired a guy named Mark Crumpacker as its chief marketing officer. (Just thought it was funny, that a guy with a last name like that ended up in the food biz.)
