When 'brasserie' is too tame
What good would this column be if it didn't on occasion teach you a new food term with which to wow friends at dinner parties? No good at all, I wager.
So here's a new gem you might get some mileage out of: breastaurant. Yes, by combining the words "breast" and "restaurant," you can refer to such titillating destinations as Hooters and its new franchise competitor, Twin Peaks (limited, to date, to Texas and New Mexico). Use it wisely, friends.
The Rocket Room has a new next-door neighbor at 230 Pueblo Ave.: Caf Banzai, a Korean and Japanese fusion restaurant.
Manager Christina Kim says her parents do all the cooking from scratch, without measuring instruments. She adds that they're quick, aiming for a turn-and-burn lunch, dinner and pickup crowd out of the five-table space. Appetizers include calamari, gyoza and egg rolls; lunch specials, chicken or tofu teriyaki and short ribs; and dinner entres, yakisoba noodles, donburi (rice bowls), fried rice and pork, chicken, beef and seafood plates.
The Kims only arrived in Colorado Springs around New Year's Day, but since they'd run a similar business in Portland, Ore., it didn't take them long to get set.

Bristol Brewing Co. (1647 S. Tejon St.) has a busy month ahead, starting with the release of the final 50 cases of XXX Warlock on Friday, Feb. 6. (Brewed in 2003, it's reached 18 percent alcohol by volume huge for a beer.) Then, on Feb. 13, the release of 2009's Smokebrush Porter will reveal this year's label-design winner. On Feb. 21, Bristol will host the Firkin Rendezvous cask ale celebration from 1 to 5 p.m. ($25-$30).
