Mr. B's on hold

It's now been five months since Mr. B's Famous BBQ & Soul Food was forced to close due to a minivan crashing into the classic Valentine diner on the corner of Sierra Madre and Cimarron streets. When I call owner Ivan Bookard for a progress report on reopening, he says, "I sure need some help on that. The [driver's] insurance company has given me a hard time. They aren't doing anything." Bookard adds that he'd be willing to partner up with an investor if that would enable him to get the diner running again.

More fat, less cold

The first local, independently owned, frozen custard shop, Colorado Custard Company (906 Manitou Ave., Manitou Springs, 685-5400), opened April 1 at the former original Heart of Jerusalem location. Boasting dozens of custard confections, shakes and malts, CCC also serves build-your-own sandwiches from a variety of meats, cheeses and breads. Frozen custard, however, is the specialty. The treat tastes similar to ice cream, yet is slightly less cold and much creamier due to a higher concentration of butterfat as well as the addition of egg yolks.

Good news for gardeners and food growers nationwide: You soon might be able to grow plants previously unadapted to your region. Bad news for everyone: That's thanks to global climate change. According to an article posted on dailyclimate.org, the U.S. Department of Agriculture will soon release a revised plant hardiness zone map (that handy, color-coded guide on the back of your seed packets) that will shift latitudinal planting zones northward thanks to warming. The map was last updated in 1990.

Firkin ridiculous!

Try saying this number clearly next time you're a few pints down: $13,757,920,427. According to data recently released as part of an economic impact study (beerservesamerica.org) paid for by the National Beer Wholesalers Association and the Beer Institute, that's how much money the beer industry contributes annually to Colorado's economy. Nationally, the study finds that beer injects $198 billion into the economy each year.

The American Culinary Federation Pikes Peak Chapter's Simply Colorado, eight-course meal will take place on Sunday, April 19 at the St. Francis of Assisi Parish Hall (2650 Parish View, pikespeakchefs.org); tickets are $65.
