Zone offense

After 10 years in business at their 25 N. Tejon St. location (632-3887), Coffee & Tea Zone owners Young and Kathy Yoon recently decided to expand their operation. Six months ago, they took over what used to be Summit House Coffee (12225 Voyager Pkwy., #3, 488-8893), and sometime in early November, they hope to be open at 6628 Delmonico Drive, Suite A, the former site of R Place Coffee and Bistro.

When asked why he's decided to grow now, Young jokes, "We're competing with Starbucks. We want to close them down!" On a more practical note, he adds, "Because people love our place."

Expect the same menu at all locations.

Double Bird Dog dare

Also on the up-and-up: Bird Dog BBQ (5984 Stetson Hills Blvd., #200, birddogbbq.com). On the eve of its fifth anniversary, it opened up a second location at 1645 Briargate Pkwy., #243.

"Business has been good for us," says owner Brad Cleveland. "I've been wanting to expand for a while, but we got all the way to the beginning of this year before I found this spot."

Even with the proliferation of barbecue joints in the Springs, Cleveland says he's not concerned about the competitors, many of whom offer full menus. (He specializes in just barbecue and staple side items.) If you haven't dined at Bird Dog yet, at both locations expect "a quick/casual format" of Oklahoma-style barbecue, which is oak-smoked meats with sauce on the side.

TPS reports great news

Last week, we commended Bristol Brewing Co. for its recent silver medal win at Denver's Great American Beer Festival, but we failed to mention Trinity Brewing Co.'s gold medal win in the Experimental Beer category. (We've been forgiven by brewer Jason Yester after saying our proper Hail Marys.)

Out of 32 entries in that category, Trinity earned the most attention with its TPS Report. In Yester's description, it's "a sour, Flanders-inspired recipe fermented with brettanomyces, then flavored with lemon, lime and tangerine zests, aged on rose petals, and triple-fermented in champagne bottles."

Damn. 'Nuff said. Bottles are for sale at the brewery for $18.95.

À la carte

• Head to Vietnamese Gardens (3043 W. Pikes Peak Ave., 520-9599), provider of potato-fritter-goodness, to help celebrate its first anniversary. From Oct. 15 to 31, diners will enjoy 30 percent off beer and wine, as well as new creations, specials and freebies by chef and owner Dung My Tram.
