You may recall that in late September, we mentioned having seen a sign in the former Flavors on Tejon (321 N. Tejon St.) for Café Bouché. You've probably also noticed that no such business has opened. That's because owner John Bouché decided to open a couple months ago in Pueblo instead (cafebouche.com), at 394 S. Joe Martinez Blvd.
Bouché, who lives in Pueblo West and previously worked as a chef at Parkview Medical Center, cited the commute as influential in the his decision. As for the menu, the café serves traditional New Orleans items like muffaletas — layered ham, salami, pepperoni, mozzarella and provolone under Creole olive salad in a round loaf.
A real Coffee Exchange
Coffee Exchange (526 S. Tejon St., 635-0277) left the warm proprietorship of Tom and Margaret Logan last month, having been sold to Anthony Gazzana and his mother, Donna.
"I've been working in coffee since before Starbucks was an idea," says Anthony, who moved from Breckenridge last year.
The confident barista says the opportunity to buy opened because the Logans moved back to their home country of Ireland; Tom Logan had grown ill and was unable to obtain health insurance here.
The new ownership promises occasional Wii events, movie nights and beer specials from Bristol Brewing Company. Additionally, the Gazzanas are expanding operating hours until 10 p.m. and keeping the same pastries, but adding more quiche, sandwich and soup options.
À la carte
• Brent Beavers, who became the new head chef at the Blue Star (1645 S. Tejon St., 632-1086) in mid-December, decided the outfit wasn't for him and departed amicably last week, according to owner Joe Coleman. The restaurant will seek a new chef, he says.
• Pizzeria Rustica (2527 W. Colorado Ave., 475-9700) will host the Passport to Campania Bacco wine dinner to benefit the Trails and Open Space Coalition at 6 p.m., Jan. 19; seats are $49 plus tax/tip.
• Canvas Café at Venue 515 (515 Manitou Ave., Manitou Springs, 685-1861, ext. 11) begins the first of a monthly, third Thursday "Raw Fusion" dinner series from 6:30 to 9 p.m., Jan. 21. Chevy Lee Raw Foods will provide the three courses; $30 seats ($35 with wine) must be reserved by Jan. 18.
• Attend a Japanese New Year Mochitsuki from 10 a.m. to noon, Jan. 23, in CC's Worner Center (902 N. Cascade Ave., jassc.org). Watch hot sticky rice pounded into mochi (rice cakes) with a giant wooden mallet inside a 150-pound wooden mortar, and sample a variety of treats, all for free.
