Have you ever seen a really cool building and thought, "Man, that's so pretty, I wish I could eat it"?
Me neither. But apparently someone had a thought not too far from that at the Colorado chapter of the American Institute of Architects (aiacolorado.org). In celebration of Colorado Architecture Month, it's invited eight Colorado restaurants to create desserts inspired by notable local architecture.
The project is called Delicious Designs, and the desserts will be served throughout April for roughly one week each. Among the participants, five are local: Nosh, the Blue Star, the Margarita at PineCreek, Amuzé Bistro and the Black Bear Restaurant. Architecture tributes include the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center; find sketches and service dates at coloradoarchitecturemonth.org.

Italian comfort food like Grandma would cook it — that's how Dat's Italian! (2514 W. Colorado Ave., datsitalian.com) owner and Brooklyn native JoAnn Trujillo describes her menu, on which no dish exceeds $8.
The outfit opens April 1 and is the first restaurant venture for Trujillo, whose family has been cooking these dishes (spaghetti pie, lasagna, etc.) for four generations. She personally will do all the cooking each morning with the help of her mother, and her two children will work front-of-the-house.
When asked about opening an Italian place only three blocks from the well-entrenched Paravicini's Italian Bistro, Trujillo says, "I don't look at them as competition — we're friends and neighbors. He's fine-dining, I'm going to be more get-it-and-go."
"We're a ma-and-pa without the pa," says Cressa Brzezinski about her almost-two-year-old Kressa's Kitchen (660 Peterson Road, 550-0324). The business is the culmination of a 25-year dream for the Colorado native, who's cooked since the age of 13.
While she jokes she "didn't plan on a recession," she says she's still managed to offer better value than any other area diner she knows of. She's remodeled her restaurant to include a new gift shop as well as a bakery. So by late April, patrons who've enjoyed in-house goodies like stuffed French toast and cinnamon rolls should be able to grab a Danish, muffin or cookie to go, too.
