That's the spirit

I'd considered titling this post "Eating Emma," then decided it'd be too morbid. But wait: Morbidity is inherent to Manitou Springs' annual Emma Crawford Coffin Races and Parade — so who cares? The Olive Tap (906 Manitou Ave., #103, theolivetap.com) certainly doesn't.

It's joined the fun with an Emma's Blend 100 percent extra virgin olive oil, mixing three types of Spanish oils "selected for their unique flavors and universal appeal." Purchase one (or more) $13, 250-milliliter bottle from a 250-bottle run between Oct. 29 and 31; reserve in advance at 358-9329. The decorative Italian bottle is shaped like a Victorian-era skirt and features a special edition label bearing the real Emma's photo. (No word yet on whether stormy weather will cause the label to slide down the bottle.)

Season's eatings

If you've noticed wanting to eat differently as we shift into fall, you might be interested in an Ayurvedic (an India-based alternative medicine system) approach to autumn foods.

In her most recent newsletter, holistic health counselor Michele Mukatis of Cultivate Health, a local nutrition/education business, says an autumn diet should include root vegetables as well as winter squash, apples, pears and nuts. Meat (fat) consumption is generally increased to combat the cold, and warming spices like cinnamon show up in dishes like apple crisp. The veggies provide dietary fiber to help "our systems sweep out the residue from sweeter, more fatty foods." • Congrats to chef Bertrand Bouquin and sommelier Timothy Baldwin of The Broadmoor (1 Lake Ave., broadmoor.com), who won last week's Copa Jerez food and sherry pairing competition U.S. finals held in New York City. They'll now go on to the International Finals in January 2011 in Jerez, Spain.

• David and Mike Hartkop from Pueblo's Solar Roast Coffee (226 N. Main St., solarroast.com) will show off their Helios 3 solar coffee roaster from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 16, outside Sammy's Organics Natural Food Store's 830 Arcturus Drive location. Free samples will be provided.

Josh & John's Ice Creams closed its 5152 N. Academy Blvd. franchise location just over a month ago. The 111 E. Pikes Peak Ave. location returns to being the city's go-to spot for oatmeal cookie ice cream.

Il Postino (123 E. Pikes Peak Ave., ilpostinocs.com) will be open as of 11 a.m., this Sunday, Oct. 17 for its first day of business.
