Rabbit to Frogger
A little over a year after opening The Rabbit Hole (101 N. Tejon St., rabbitholedinner.com) in the difficult subterranean location that had spurned many others before it, owners Joe and Amber Campana have plans to overhaul another fickle downtown spot: 111 E. Boulder St. It's the former home of Burgers and Bowls and Taste of New Orleans, and previously a sushi joint.
Like her predecessors, Amber mentions the location's proximity to Palmer High School and Colorado College, and the potential for student support. And even though she and Joe have yet to hammer out the food offerings, they have another concept that just may be the key to longevity: vintage arcade games.
With Supernova, loosely inspired by a Denver dive called The 1Up — which, on its website, credits businesses in Portland, Ore., and Brooklyn, N.Y., for the arcade-bar concept — Amber says the idea is to sling student lunches by day, then turn into a 21-plus '80s arcade-and-bar by night.
"We've been buying games for months," she says. "We've got Donkey Kong, Pac-Man, Asteroids, Dig Dug, Joust." Most purchases came via eBay and Craigslist, for anywhere between $300 and $900.
In truth, she says, Joe and Rabbit Hole chef Josh Beemer haven't nailed down Supernova's culinary approach, other than to say it will "be mostly bar food" and certainly not pizza, with Louie's literally next door and Poor Richard's around the corner. Expect an opening around mid-August, once a liquor license has been obtained.
After its Mother's Day brunch this past Sunday, Conscious Table (26 E. Kiowa St.) ceased service. Offering cooking classes in addition to lunch and dinner service, the outfit had opened last fall with high hopes for the merger of creativity and sustainability. It continued the tradition of "literary dinners" first started by chef Brent Beavers at Sencha some years prior.
According to co-chef Aaron Retka, the reason for closure is financial.
Taps down, taps up
• As reported on our blog late last week, and by Focus on the Beer prior to that, Judge Baldwin's Brewing Co., inside the Antlers Hilton hotel (4. S. Cascade Ave., antlers.com), recently ceased brewing operations in favor of other craft Colorado beers on its taps. As of press time, only eight kegs of the Yardwork Pale Ale remain of brewer Mike Ford's legacy.
• Big congrats to owner Duane Lujan and Rocky Mountain Brewery (625 Paonia St., rockymountainbrews.com), which earned both a gold and silver at the recent World Beer Cup, for the Eat a Peach and Da' Yoopers (cherry) beers, respectively.
