Multiple food providers displayed great heart and community involvement this past week, offering such gifts as free meals to evacuees, firefighters and police. While "Unto others" mentions many of them, there are others that range from Tucanos Brazilian Grill to Ranch Foods Direct to Italco Food Products (out of Denver).
We're sure that other providers and people have pitched in, too, without getting the recognition they deserve. So we invite readers to post a note of thanks to anyone in the food community who contributed food, time, money or other help, as a comment to this column or a reader review at csindy.com.
Also, we want to mention a benefit at 7 p.m., Wednesday, July 4, at Front Range Barbeque (2330 W. Colorado Ave., frbbq.com): It features music from Grass It Up (including Indy employee David Jeffrey) and Carrie Nation & the Speakeasy. Plus the good folks at Bristol Brewing Co. have dropped off a couple kegs, so beer will be available via donation. (Reach deep, friends.) Those funds, and a portion of the restaurant's food-sale proceeds, will go toward the Waldo Canyon Fire Victim Assistance Fund.
We told you in June 20's Indy about how Her Story Café (2356 S. Academy Blvd., herstorycafe.com) owner Liz Rosenbaum names her menu items after inspiring women. In response to the Waldo Canyon Fire, Rosenbaum recently created the Jerri Marr Sandwich Platter, in honor of the Forest Service supervisor who's been key to local media briefings and a familiar face in people's homes this past week.
The $10 plate for two includes half portions of three sandwiches from the menu plus two sides. "The trial and feedback has been amazing," reads a note on the café's Facebook page, "... so we had to give it an amazing name."

• According to the Colorado Springs Business Journal, The Candy Bar, "a 1950s-style candy store," should open sometime this week at 124 N. Tejon St., the former Johannes Hunter Jewelers spot. Owner Beni Levi also operates My Candy inside the Citadel mall. The expansion plans to offer "natural candies," popcorn and gift items such as stuffed animals.
• El Tamale Loco appears to have closed at 26 S. Wahsatch Ave.
• Chef Dan Bartlett is offering a free "How to Prepare a Delicious Three-Course Meal" class from 11 a.m. to noon, Saturday, July 7, at Colorado Coffee Merchants (302 E. Fillmore St., 473-8878). Reservations are required to see Bartlett demo a pear salad, skirt steak and tiramisu.
