Six tons of rollin' love

You might imagine the maiden voyage of Anthony Mullane's Hummer limousine involved ferrying political fat cats to a glitzy social function, perhaps a few bloated indiscretions and a whole lotta sauce.

But the first gig of this yacht-length vehicle -- the only one of its kind in all of Southern Colorado -- was to escort a 3-year-old from Monument to his birthday party at Chuck E. Cheese. With two color televisions, DVD and VHS players, and satellite radio, no doubt the tike enjoyed the ride. (Memo to child's parents: What's on for his fourth? Air Force One to the Discovery Zone?)

A part-time respiratory therapist, Mullane decided to go into the transportation racket to fill in some of the holes in his three-day workweek. It's been about two years and he's not complaining about the business. "People call for the Hummer," he says, mentioning that the requests range from military weddings to rock concerts in Denver. Mullane's fleet also includes a limo bus with even bigger televisions.

His partner and sometimes driver Gary Jorgensen calls the Hummer "six tons of rollin' love," only part of which is hyperbole. The vehicle actually weighs six tons. And the cost of a new one is somewhere in the neighborhood of $185 large. But for $150 it can be yours ... for an hour. However, at 9 miles per gallon this Hummer won't be shuttling Sierra Club members anywhere.
