In the - music industry, the lagging indicator is nothing more - than that of a new trend (grunge) begetting cheap - imitations (post-grunge). It appears we've entered into - the emo fallout, with countless cheapo sound-a-likes - flooding the market. The latest is The Red Jumpsuit - Apparatus, which does little to hide its My Chemical - Romance love on the recently released debut Don't - You Fake It. With just enough screamo ("Waiting") - and alt melodies ("Face Down") to garner radio interest, - the 12-track album feels like yesterday's news, proving - you can fake it when major labels are paying the tab. The - rest of us will have to suffer through another term of - artifice.  John Benson

The mix, or compendium, or - whatever it is, is not so much mash-up as pure bedlam - a frenetic, unrelenting and entirely gleeful record. As - learned in indie rock as it is in mainstream hip-hop - (what other guest list features Modest Mouse and The - Notorious B.I.G.?), Night Ripper pairs off Ying - Yang Twins with The Verve, Slim Thug with Oasis, and - Neutral Milk Hotel with Juelz Santana, to name but the - tiniest few. Usually, albums like Ripper, being - mostly an interesting idea, fall flat. This genre-flaunting - scattershot, though, works only too well, an ADHD - delirium of symbiotic opposites and wild alchemy. It's a - wonder this album is legal  but thank heavens, for - now, it is.     Girl Talk's mashed-to-death Night Ripper is best filed under "Else." (DVD) -  -  -  - Vapor  -  - If there is one indie rock band that is positioning itself - for big things, Canadian folk rock duo Tegan & Sara - could be it. The twosome's 2004 album So Jealous - , with its pop hooks and bright guitar sound, finally - gave the girls mainstream exposure; The White Stripes - even covered the track "Walking with a Ghost." So while - the world awaits their next studio project, the act - decided to look back with debut DVD It's Not Fun, - Don't Do It!. Though filled with the obligatory extras - (documentary and photo albums) and live material (an - entire Toronto concert), it's the commentary from the - twin sisters, oddly enough, that captures your attention. - If you want to have some fun and get on board with the - next semi-obscure band to go big, pick up this DVD. -  John Benson
