Spotlight on: PAPAAs Awards Pikes Peak Arts Council

Conceived in 2001, the PAPAAs honor the Pikes Peak region's arts and artists in an Academy Award-style ceremony. It will be staged this year on Sept. 19 at the Fine Arts Center. The partnership between the Pikes Peak Arts Council and the newly rejuvenated Fine Arts Center will benefit everyone interested in the arts and attending the awards.

This year's pageant promises to be the best yet, with a cash bar and hors d'oeuvres in the Deco Lounge beginning at 6 p.m. Local clown Jim Jackson and actress Donna Vessey will host the awards ceremony, which begins at 7 p.m.

Categories include: classical music (large ensemble, small ensemble and solo performance), visual art show, visual artist, theatre (actor, actress, production, behind-the-scenes), popular music (group and individual), poetry and choreography.

Why poetry is a category, and not prose, is curious. Ditto for choreography and dance.

Each category has a jury comprised of "arts lovers and aficionados in that particular discipline." They choose a pool of nominees and narrow it down to three in each category. The winners are chosen prior to the awards ceremony, and the envelopes are hermetically sealed and encased in a lead safe, to be opened only by the officials.

Sounds like fun and a good excuse to pull out the rarely worn, cleavage-revealing evening gown or dusty tuxedo.
