Still weird after all these years

Yankovic still gots his shtick

As one who stakes no claim to the high church of indie rock respectability, I can proudly state that the best rock experience of my life occurred at a "Weird Al" Yankovic show.

While it's true that most of his songs are nonsense about junk food and television, the man who gave us "Eat It," "Amish Paradise," and the often overlooked, "Biggest Ball of Twine in Minnesota" puts on the most vibe-free smorgasbords of silly I've ever seen. And trust me, I've seen things wayyyy sillier than Silly String.

When I saw him on his 1999 tour, the Weird One pulled no less than 14 costume changes in the course of two hours, segued between numbers with video shorts, and he even managed to perform with his leg wrapped around his neck.

Yankovic says his current Poodle Hat CD tour will be more of the same.

"It's a high-energy two-hour-long, rock and comedy multimedia extravaganza with film clips and costume changes and the whole deal," Yankovic told the Independent.

The Yankster will be at the state fair in Pueblo Saturday spoofing the likes of Eminem, Nelly, Backstreet Boys and Billy Joel. And, of course, his requisite original James Tayloresque ballads and medleys or raw power polka.

Though he's now married with child, Yankovic says he hasn't lost his edge.

"People have these unfounded fears, 'Oh he's married now, he has a kid, he's gonna soften up and start putting out Raffi albums.' I want to say, 'I'll show you who's soft, I'll show you who's middle of the road!'"

So grab yourself a corndog, take a gander at the award-wearing heifers and watch the accordion fiend defy midlife expectations in the heart of P-town.
