As KRCC preps for this weekend's Blues Under the Bridge concert featuring the Holmes Brothers and Otis Taylor, locals ponder the genre's impact and concoct lineup wishlists.

What comes to mind when you think of the blues? I think of greats like B.B. King, Robert Johnson, John Wise and Jimi Hendrix. There's some really good local blues guys around, too, like John-Alex Mason.
Do you have a favorite blues artist? Kim Simmonds of Savoy Brown, and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Of the old school guys, it's John Lee Hooker.
What ingredients make for a really good blues song? A good riff, a nice key change, a catchy tag line.
If you put together your own blues concert, who'd be on the bill? I'd go with contemporaries like Monte Montgomery, Carolyn Wonderland and Greg Brown because a lot of the old greats are getting too old. I wouldn't go see B.B. King these days, and I was really disappointed seeing James Brown recently. You can get too old to sing the blues.

What does "the blues" bring to your mind? It makes me be happy, want to have fun.
What is it about the blues that grabs you? I'm from New Orleans, so the blues make me think of Zydeco and Creole music. My grandfather was one of the first to record Creole music in Louisiana, and my cousin is Chris Ardoin, one of the top two or three Zydeco artists.
Is the blues a younger or an older person's music? I think mostly older people, 40 and older, listen to the blues. It takes a little maturity and life experience to appreciate it.
If you were a blues artist, what would your moniker be? Down South.

Who are your favorite blues greats? I go for some of the old school stuff like John Lee Hooker and Robert Johnson because it seems to come straight out of their souls. With some of the younger guys, it seems more like a genre they fall into, pick up on. There are some younger local artists who are really good, though.
What makes for a really good blues song? It has a haunting quality, a sort of dirty, raw sound, and good slide guitar.
If you put a blues concert together, who'd be on your bill? I'd have a local musician, John-Alex Mason, along with Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and maybe John Lee Hooker.
If you were a blues artist, what would your moniker be? Krickety Kirk.
