Sixty seconds with Sugarland's Kristian Bush

Indy: You've started your Incredible Machine tour now, months before your next album [The Incredible Machine] will actually be released. Why tour before the album?

KB: We decided that since the music business is upside down and no one can decide how to promote a record anymore, no one can agree ... So we were like, "Well, how about this? How about we go play all these songs for people, and then sometime in October they can buy them?"

Indy: You've talked about The Incredible Machine blurring genres and being an anthemic album. In what other ways would you describe it?

KB: I think there's only one true ballad on this album. And Jennifer [Nettles] and I — I think, minus one or two outside writers on one or two songs — we wrote the whole album, just the two of us. So you're getting a lot of courage and bravery, and kind of raw inspiration that's going on here — and very authentic.

Indy: Did you worry about perhaps going too far outside of your past with this album, and maybe losing some of your fans along the way?

KB: I think that I worried maybe while we were writing it — wait a minute ... are we making that crazy record that is the one in your collection of your favorite band that you're like, "Ah, I don't like that one." Are we making that record? Are we out to lunch or something? And I played it for one of my best friends. I played him some of the songs. He was like, "Whoa!" I said, "What?" He's like, "Well, that might be your biggest record ever."

At the World Arena, May 8.
