According to a survey released Tuesday by TripAdvisor, 41 percent of those planning to travel this summer will hit a historical site or landmark; 31 percent will get their hike on; 25 percent will get down with some kind of water sport; 15 percent will attend a concert; and 12 percent will publicly masticate at a food festival.
With that in mind, pity the poor saps planning to just "wing it" for a few days in the Pikes Peak region: We've got offerings in all the above, and more, rolling out from now through Labor Day. It's an overwhelming assortment, all within a 15-minute drive, demanding only a little sunscreen and maybe a water bottle or two. (It is, after all, a dry heat.)
So we invite those soon-to-be-weary travelers to turn to these Summer Preview pages for calendars, stories and previews of the hottest events. While it's set up as a locals' guide, it should help even visitors get acclimated to the region.
And if all that outdoorsy stuff sounds like nothing but bunk, then check our music and movies stories. Though nobody may be able to match the time filmmaker Joss Whedon is having — basking in adulation for the acclaimed Cabin in the Woods, rolling in the dough with The Avengers, and prepping In Your Eyes and Much Ado About Nothing — we can all still enjoy the fruits of the season.
