Welcome to the 2008 Independent Summer Guide. Here begins a full array of the biggest whos, whats, wheres and whens of the next four months.

That, of course, leaves just the whys. Why go to a sheep-shearing festival? Or watch a tomahawk-throwing competition? Or race up Pikes Peak?

Good questions. Our answer: Hey, it's summertime, the time for taking leaps of faith and trying out harebrained schemes. How do you think the gator rodeo got started, anyway?

So put on your sunblock and shades, grab some water and get out there.
