Friday

You know that girl in elementary school who had every new Barbie in its pretty pink box stacked in her closet? Well today you can go to Goodwill's Doll Sale at 2340-F Montebello Square Drive and buy the treasures she donated during her "I'm so over dolls" phase. The event is today and tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., but you will want to arrive early if you are looking for that special Magical Holiday Adventure Barbie. They will also have beanies, doll furniture, stuffed animals, antique dolls, Madame Alexander dolls and Pleasant Company dolls. Call 635-4483 for more.

Saturday

Join the venerable Becky Elder for a workshop in Permaculture today at the Mountain Park Environmental Center (9161 Mountain Park Road, Beulah). Certified in permaculture design and wildlife rehabilitation, Elder also is a CSU Master Gardener. For the uninitiated, permaculture involves creating homes and food production systems that work in harmony with nature. For only $25, you can spend a day (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) learning the basics. Bring a bag lunch. Call 485-4444 to get with the permaculture.

Put on your sunglasses; you'll need to protect those tender corneas from the glare coming from the Garden of the Gods Campground (3704 W. Colorado Ave.), and the rally of some 70 vintage Airstream motor homes. The owners will polish their silver dreams with diapers and allow the public to come and romanticize about their mobile lifestyles at an open house from 1-3 p.m., perfect timing for optimum sun reflection off the Airstreams.

Yo burros! It's your birthday. We're gonna party like it's your birthday. We're gonna sip sun tea like it's your birthday, even if it isn't really your birthday. The Western Museum of Mining and Industry (1025 North Gate Road) offers free ice cream in honor of Oro and Nugget, the burros. The Burro Birthday Bash runs 12:30-4 p.m. and the whole family can party with the Oro and Nugget and learn about the WMMI. Call 488-0880 for the lowdown on the getdown.

Plenty of people hate the General Palmer statue, or at least its nonstrategic placement in the middle of the street. But Gen. William Jackson Palmer did wonderful things, like deeding Monument Valley Park (Cache La Poudre and Glen Avenue) to the city after he had spent over 10 years acquiring and developing the park. Today, go on a guided tour of the park and join the Historic Preservation Alliance in celebrating Palmer Day. Meet at the large pavilion near the swimming pool at 5 p.m. for the walking tour. Bring your own picnic and $5 donation to enjoy during a presentation of music, speakers and a singalong of turn-of-the last-century songs around 5:45 p.m. Call Sue at 538-6082 for more.

Alamosa isn't all that far away, especially when you're going to see blues master Otis Taylor perform. Admission is by donation, so if you've only got $10 left after paying for Bush-era gasoline to get there, it's all right. Taylor plays as part of the Alamosa Live Music Association's Sundays at Six series at Cole Park in Alamosa. Bubba Hyde's BBQ is slinging barbecue to accompany the show, which is fortunate since the best side dish for the blues is slaw. Let's hope they've got slaw. The show starts at 6 p.m. Call 719/587-3210 for more.

Who needs a rhythm section when you've got a tap-dancer and a synthesizer? Certainly not Tilly and the Wall, the first band signed to Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst's record label, Team Love. Sometimes the band's tap-dancer dances, and sometimes she raps on a suitcase using drumsticks. Either way you are in for a sunshiny treat from Omaha, packaged with the always-absorbing Pedro the Lion at 32 Bleu (32 S. Tejon St.) The show starts at 9 p.m. but the doors open at 8. Call 955-5664 for more.

Friday

I'm not going to make any snarky remarks about unshaven armpits or Volvos with Nader/LaDuke 2000 bumper stickers in the parking lot of the Ani DiFranco show at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison. Instead, I'll point out that on her latest album, Educated Guess, Ani provided lead and backup vocals and all instrumental tracks, recorded it on an eight-track reel to reel and mixed the album all by herself. Be in awe of the woman who is Ani. Soulive and Andrew Bird open up for her starting at 7 p.m. Call 303/830-8497 or hit up www.ticketmaster.com for more.
