That's edutainment

Long Story Short

More than just about any genre this side of contemporary country, the rap world has a long history of reaping profits from the art of caricature.

As far as we can tell, nobody's ever gone broke overestimating the public's appetite for gangstas, Juggalos, yacht-hop voyages and (shudder) country-rap collaborations. Even Public Enemy felt the need to balance Chuck D's militant politics with Flavor Flav's cartoonish hype, giving the group an advantage over unremittingly earnest innovators like KRS-One and Dead Prez.

Of course, there's nothing wrong with entertainment for entertainment's sake. But there's also nothing wrong with finding some kind of balance.

Here in Colorado Springs, the latter is best represented by A Black Day, the freshly minted collaboration of local emcees whose combined résumés include Accumen, Fidel RedStar, Audible and Mad Trees. The group is celebrating its debut album, Undercast, with upcoming CD release shows in Colorado Springs and Denver.

We brought the members of A Black Day together for this week's cover interview, which begins here. Eloquent, outspoken and, yes, entertaining, the four emcees share a rapport both in conversation and onstage.

You can witness the latter at the Triple Nickel this Saturday, where the band will celebrate its CD release with assists from Bullhead*ded and Stoney Bertz. The evening will be hosted by talented local poet and emcee Itsrealight Love. Don't expect gangstas or Juggalos, but do expect an evening of great hip-hop.
