Even though the doors will open for the first time at Bourbon Brothers Southern Kitchen just this week, plans for growth are already in progress.
As explained by CEO Bob Mudd, there are three related, limited liability companies owned by Bourbon Brothers Holding Company, founded by local businessman JW Roth, who's been involved in Front Range private equity for more than 30 years.
Bourbon Brothers Restaurant Group includes the Southern Kitchen, which has been in the works for more than a year now, and the soon-to-be-under-construction Bourbon Brothers Seafood and Chophouse, and Bourbon Brothers Tap Room. Both of these will be housed in a two-story, New Orleans-style building, to the south of the Southern Kitchen, with plans to start service by the end of 2014.
"It's going to look just like some of the architecture that's on Bourbon Street, with an iron porch around it," Mudd says. "The first floor is gonna be a very high-end seafood and chophouse. Seafood flown in fresh daily ... [Seating] between 70 and 80 people. It's gonna have a piano bar in it as well.
"The second floor is going to be the Bourbon Brothers Tap Room. So a little more casual environment, a number of fire pits that people can aggregate around. The doors will double swing open every nine feet, so during the summer, with the views that that piece of property has, you can integrate the outside area with the inside area."
And that facility is a piece of larger development plans for a total three acres, which will include a large promenade with an outdoor amphitheatre and farmers market. "We want it to be a community-centric venue, where we can have concerts and family events," Mudd explains.
Bourbon Brothers Brands, meanwhile, is going to be the entity for premium products such as cigars, apparel and, potentially, bourbon.
Franchising is in the business plan, too, and Bourbon Brothers Franchise will handle all of that. Currently, plans are in the works to open two more company-owned Southern Kitchens in each of 2014 and 2015. "We're in negotiation on a number of pieces of land — some in Colorado, some outside of Colorado," Mudd says. And he adds, "Complementary to that strategy, we expect to initiate franchise sales in April or May of this year."
On top of all this is a possible company merger. Shareholders with Smokin Concepts Development Corp., a public company that owns the Justin Timberlake/Ryan Tedder-created Southern Hospitality franchise in Denver ("Southern Hospitality starts its national march," May 15, 2013), have made an attempt to buy Bourbon Brothers Holding Company. For that reason, financial data on the entire project is being withheld until after the vote on the merger, scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 22; last week, Mudd said he anticipated it being approved.
