The fight goes on

Street Smarts

The struggle for equal rights has come a long way, but recent events remind us that we still have a long way to go.

To what extent do current racial tensions worry you? It doesn't worry me. There's always racial tension going on; part of it is we just live in such a mixed society.

How surprised are you about the bombing of the local NAACP offices? I'm not surprised — things happen like that all the time.

What would Martin Luther King Jr. say about where we are as a society today? I think he'd just put his head down and be speechless.

What's one thing that you'd like to see happen to move us forward? We need higher wages for everyone. We need to raise the minimum wage, and have a safer environment for kids.

Do you feel any racial tensions in our community? No, not really in our community, at least not that I've noticed.

What about nationally? Well, yeah, there's some, but TV and Facebook are really making a lot out of it, maybe making it bigger than it is.

How surprised are you about the bombing of the local NAACP offices? I read about it, but I wasn't surprised. And we don't really know the whole story yet.

Have you seen any good come from the Michael Brown and Eric Garner stories? The violence isn't good, but a certain awareness is. The police have a tough job, but they still have to be held accountable.

What do you think it will take to move us forward? More time. I think it's just isolated groups in society that are holding us back; I think people in general are basically good.

Do you sense any racial tensions here in town? No, I don't personally.

Have you seen any good come from the Michael Brown and Eric Garner stories? Maybe it's helped bring people more together, because it's not just black people who feel strongly about it.

What do you figure Martin Luther King Jr. would say about where we are as a society today? I think he'd be happy, but still think it needs some work.

What's one thing that you'd like to see happen to move us forward? Everything that's happening is moving us forward, especially social media. Facebook and sharing music is helping people get comfortable with each other. Race is a part of history, so it will always be there, but a lot has changed in my generation.
