The key issues

The always-ready-to-run-for-office Republican candidate Alan Keyes (Keyes ran for president in 1996 and 2000) has "moved" to Illinois this year to run against Democratic rising star Barack Obama for the U.S. Senate. Keyes' No. 1 issue? As always, abortion. As he said two years ago, "This issue alone, which I believe dominates our moral decline as a people, should decide this and every election cycle." But what about terrorism, the economy, perhaps government efficiency?

Even though I am pro-life, I am - inclined to vote for Kerry because I don't think Bush has - done a very good job at all. - - What does the pro-life label signify in your mind? It means that I don't believe in abortion whatsoever. - Even from the time of conception. I believe that life - should not be hindered in any way. - - What do you think about politicians who make the - abortion issue their No. 1 priority? I don't think it - should be No. 1. I think it's just one issue, and I don't - believe that you vote on just one issue. There are a lot of - other issues to take into consideration -- like the war, - the economy, better health care.

The last trimester abortions are what - influence me; they jab this really sharp thing in the - baby's head to kill it for no reason other than the mother - doesn't want the kid. - - Do you think of yourself as pro-life, pro-choice or - something else? Pro-life. - - What does that label signify in your mind? Even if - you're pregnant because of a rape, you should still trust - God that you can always give the baby up for adoption to - somebody that wants the baby. It's just totally selfish to - not want to spend nine months of your life to give up a - child's life. - - What do you think about politicians who make this - issue their No. 1 priority? I think that politics isn't - [Keyes'] No. 1 priority. Morality is his priority. He's trying - to get a message across. Regardless of whether he's - elected or not -- he probably knows that he won't be -- - he's willing to sacrifice his popularity for something he - believes in.
