The Wheel

Union Station, 2419 N. Union Blvd., 227-7168 Saturday, May 26, 8 p.m. $5 for adults; $10 for under 21.

About a month back, The Wheel, a group of four 16- and 17-year-old Lewis-Palmer High School students from Monument, ran away with the second round of Emergenza Battle of the Bands.

It wasn't even close, thanks to throbbing guitar, bass and drum lines, arching keys and vocals and awe-inspiring stage presence. The Wheel's 20-minute set looked like that of a band that had been together for years more than the not-quite-yet-two this group has to its name.

Now, with another round of the competition coming in June at Denver's Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom, the guys Sean Woestehoff (guitar, vocals), Nick Yanez (drums), Robbie Ward (organ, piano) and Zach Pagano (bass) are preparing to take the world by storm.

Well, after they've first taken care of things around their hometown.

"Our goal is to gig four or five days a week this summer," Woestehoff says.

Sound like a lot? Not to a band that's also got an 18-song rock opera in the works.

"I revolve most of the time in my life around [the band]," Yanez says. "I would love to make it a career."

He's not alone.

"We want to get to a point where we won't have to get jobs," Ward says.

"Yeah," Pagano agrees. "This is better than pouring coffee for a living."
