Sick of mindless pre-summer cinematic fare, generally Hollywood's worst? Sharpen your moviegoing senses with these two local film festivals.
At Colorado College, Professor Hong Jiang of Taiwan hosts Chinese Film Week, May 8 to May 11. Events, which are open to the public, include two public lectures, two roundtable discussions and four films from China's Fifth and Sixth Generations, 1980s-1990s.
East of the city, the Fountain Valley School is holding its 30th annual Young Filmmakers Video/Film Festival. Founded in the 1960s, this was the country's first high-school sponsored showcase for young filmmakers. In 1984, the festival was rededicated by Samuel Goldwyn Jr. ('43) for the purpose of encouraging young filmmakers. Eventually renamed for Dominique Dunne ('77), the festival attracts entries from across the United States.
This year's entries were received in April, and are currently being screened and judged. A gala reception and public screening of prize-winning entries and honorable mentions will be held on Saturday, May 13, at the Fountain Valley School Performing Arts Center. An assortment of other videos, deemed by the selection committee to be of significant interest and merit, will also be shown at that time.
