War is hell 

More than two years after the initial bombs in Baghdad, U.S. troops still are in Iraq. As the body count rises, public interest and support seem to be waning. (For more, read the cover story, beginning on page 16. )

I'm not sure that it was a good decision, but I do - support the troops, especially since my son is a - commander in the Navy and he was in Iraq at the - beginning of the war. -  - Have the American people tuned out the war? I - don't - think so. I think the American people are interested in - the war, especially when so many of our sons and - daughters are over there. -  - Is Bush a hero or a villain? Neither. I think that - he means - well and that he felt that he's doing the right thing.

    What's your position on the war? I regret that we are at war. I'm not sure that it was a good decision, but I do support the troops, especially since my son is a commander in the Navy and he was in Iraq at the beginning of the war.

    Have the American people tuned out the war? I don't think so. I think the American people are interested in the war, especially when so many of our sons and daughters are over there.

    Is Bush a hero or a villain? Neither. I think that he means well and that he felt that he's doing the right thing.

I think it's going to go on for a very long - time, - a number of years, maybe even another decade. It seems - like progress is being made at a very slow rate. Especially - with what just happened over in London, England; I think - that kind of proves that.

    When and how do you think the situation will be resolved? I think it's going to go on for a very long time, a number of years, maybe even another decade. It seems like progress is being made at a very slow rate. Especially with what just happened over in London, England; I think that kind of proves that.

Or at least we - have our foot in the door, right? Because I do think our - ideology as a culture is superior.

    How have your opinions of the war shifted since the beginning?When I heard about it, I was pissed. I was really upset that we were going to war because it didn't seem like the right step ... I'm not saying we haven't screwed up over there, but in a lot of ways I'm happy that we've been over there, not only for getting Saddam out of power, but really encouraging a democratic and peaceful atmosphere in the Middle East. Or at least we have our foot in the door, right? Because I do think our ideology as a culture is superior.
