Welcome aboard, Rich

Several months ago the city's daily newspaper rewarded Rich Tosches, its most popular writer (who also happened to offer up criticism to the city's rich and powerful), by demoting him. Tosches has since left, and after a roundabout fashion has decided the Independent -- which isn't afraid to take on the rich and powerful -- is his true home. In other words, The Gazette's bad judgment is our gain.

I saw that on the local TV news last week. It's great. He was one of the few Gazette reporters who brought fresh insights into local issues. - - Is this a step up or down for him? I don't really read The Gazette, and I do read the Independent, so I'd have to say it's a step up for us readers. - - Can you name a reporter still at The Gazette who was there two years ago? I didn't know The Gazette used reporters. I thought they relied on AP stories. - - What should Tosches write about? Insights into the community. Perspective-type pieces. - - Should the Independent try to hire Chuck Asay away from The Gazette? I'm not all that familiar with Chuck Asay, so I can't say. But I'm a huge fan of Tom Tomorrow. The Independent should stick with him.

I've missed his column since he was demoted by The Gazette. He stirred the pot; he was a whistle-blower. He was funny and compassionate. - - Is this a step up or a step down for him? The Gazette is a bigger paper, but the Independent will give him a freer voice. - - What should he write about? Do more investigative reporting. Bring up issues that are controversial. - - Should fhe Independent try to hire Chuck Asay away from The Gazette? No. In fact, I think The Gazette should get rid of him.
