Where to go snowshoeing

It's true the best snowshoeing trail is the one you've got completely to yourself. But in the spirit of sharing what we love, here are some trails to explore after that next great snowstorm.

Mueller State Park
(U.S. Highway 24 west to Divide; Colorado 67 south to Mueller)
Mueller's trails are perfect for snowshoers, especially in the north part of the park. Stop and pick up a list of the best winter trails at the visitor center.

Horsethief Park
(Same as Mueller; continue on to parking next to old tunnel)
This trail, easily accessible even after a snowstorm, heads uphill for about .75 miles, then crosses into a broad meadow that's great in the winter snow-filled but sunny.

Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument
(U.S. Highway 24 west to Florissant; left on Teller County 1 to the monument)
When this place gets snow, it's an idyllic snowshoe playground. Last winter, deep powder covered the trails that wind pleasantly up and down along the hillsides. Again, plenty of sun and plenty of snow.

The Crags
(Same as Mueller; continue to sign on your left to Crags campground)
You've got to have a backup plan, because the road to the Crags can be impassable in the winter. But if it's open, this place is a snowshoer's paradise.

Rampart Reservoir loop trail and Rainbow Gulch
(U.S. Highway 24 west to Woodland Park; right at McDonald's; right on Loy Creek Road where road forks and right on Rampart Range Road, when pavement ends. Watch for Rainbow Gulch trailhead on your left.)

Rainbow Gulch Trail is a go-to destination for a good, old-fashioned workout. Rainbow Gulch is an old road that leads from Rampart to the reservoir shoreline. Once there, pick up the trail that follows the shore all the way around the water. Deep snow and a symphony of booms and cracks played by the ice make this a memorable destination.
