Wrestle With Jimmy

Local band Wrestle With Jimmy is looking to separate itself from the mighty stream of Colorado Springs' cover bands by which acts it chooses to emulate.

"Everyone plays the same classic rock songs," says drummer Stu Pray. "The pop-punk culture is what we like, and there aren't a helluva lot of bands that do that anymore."

Wrestle With Jimmy, or WWJ, covers the likes of Good Charlotte, Blink-182, Weezer and, of course, Jimmy Eat World songs that appeal to folks just turning 21, Pray says. And that's the idea: The crowd (often in bars) is the main focus.

"We take a lot of feedback from the crowd," Pray says. "If there's a song that we really love, but the crowd doesn't like it, we take a step back and see why."

Cover bands often have to walk an edge when they're switching from a Weezer song to, say, an Eve 6 tune.

"We try to get in the mindset that the groups had when they wrote the song," Pray says. "You have to do the song justice, but you can throw your own twist in it."

It's all about just trying to find a happy medium, he says.

"Music is always changing," he says. "We're just trying to go outside of those staple songs that everyone else does."
