Most students at one time or another learn to hate the authors of their textbooks. Super genius Raymond Chang shared part of the blame for the year I spent flunking AP Chemistry (worst test grade: a 14 percent). The next year, college English rolled in with a purple book co-authored by poet X.J. Kennedy, which brought a happy ending. For me, his textbook acted as a veritable Bible for all that is superlative in this language. Kennedy will read a few of his own works at 7 tonight as part of Colorado College's Visiting Writers Series in the Gates Common Room (1025 N. Cascade Ave.).
