My family and I used to love eating here regularly for the past 10 years under several new owners, however the most recent new owners were EXTREMELY disrespectful and rude to me and my entire family. We are RETIRED military, therefore did not get the 10% off, but pulled out our cell phone to check in on facebook for the 10% discount instead...not only did we not get the 10% discount, but one of the new owners said we were annoying him! Very unprofessional....will NOT be eating here again until new owners take over this place.
Tried NJs twice now, once last week and again today, this time to redeem a coupon for a few free slices due to the mishap from last week's visit. Today was much better. The slice of sausage pizza tasted like they had actually recently taken it out of the oven unlike the first visit's luke warm, kinda stale slice.
Here's my love/hate list:
The color scheme, pretty much an eyesore. Red and green stripes? Terrible.
Why New Jersey pizza instead of New York? Who thinks of NJ style pizza over NY style?
Service subpar. I'm all for grungy looking kids running a pizza place, but there needs to be a little more organization, communication and promptness.
Too many items on the menu. Just stick to the pizza and apparently the strombolis!
The concept. Their is a definite need for a pizza-by-the-slice spot downtown.
There's really no need to go beyond pizza and few other items like salad and maybe bread sticks and, again, apparently strombolis. But if I'm in the mood for a pasta this is not the place. They need to cater to the quick-stop business lunch and CC crowd during the day and the inebriated kids walking by needing something cheap to eat at night. The quality is good enough to warrant the low price. If I want to have a nice sit down pizza experience I'll go across the street to IlVicino's. Don't try to compete with them, differentiate by attracting the pizza-by-the-slice crowd.
This place is first rate. It is clean as a whistle. The people who own it are sweet as can be, and so gracious. The food is simply every bit as wonderful as this review describes. Under twenty dollars for two people to have one of the tastiest dinners available in the Springs.
Not that it matters one way or another but I have never replied to any topic on the Indi prior to this one ONLY because I happened to be there that night & because of over hearing what these people ordered did I put the two together.
For guys wearing flip flops & shorts to a well established restaurant it was like they were on vacation!
First off YES it's only appropriate to have the founders photo in the lobby, that's no different then having a deceased relatives photo on your wall. I did not hear nor see anything along the lines of a "fetching" action from the bartender nor did I hear anyone make a "fish milkshake" comment. Perhaps I was just enjoying the ambiance & my dinner once again, I did not really focus on anything else other then while I was waiting between courses. Besides if they disliked the Sunbird SO much why go back for Brunch?! Or was it Brunch then back for dinner?
Side Note: I have been to 2 weddings there & they were beautiful, fun & I would recomend it!
I find this review to be extremely arrogant & with blatant disrespect to the Sunbird as if the "critic" was trying to get back at someone on a VERY childish & inappropriate level using the Independent & Sunbird as their personal choice of weapons. The restaurant may be a little out of date but that's the beauty of it. Having done my research after eating here it turns out the Swordfish that was rudely cut down has ben added to other Specialty Restaurants Corporations menus proving I would not take what this individual has said to heart, try it for yourself & don't be a follower of some tacky verbal barrage!
We tried Sunbird 6 years ago, never went back.
$28 for a chewy sirloin strip steak and $33 for a bottle of K-J Chard taught us to never go back to that clip joint. They clip you real good for the view up on the hill, but it's all downhill from there. Those were prices in 2006. Today, Sunbird charges $38/bottle for K-J Chard, which is outrageous, the clip job continues.
I can get K-J Chard at Costco for $11. Even today, I rarely see K-J Chard over $29/bottle in eateries.
For a lot less money I can go to Saltgrass to get a great steak that's always tender, is cooked to order, with excellent side dishes and where we receive professional service. Saltgrass (and the new Bonefish Grill) manage to pull off one of the most difficult tasks of any upscale eatery chain which uses fresh ingredients, and that is to maintain consistently high performance, standards and customer satisfaction.
We've enjoyed Saltgrass scores of times and will continue to do so, relegating Sunbird to the no-no list.
This was once one of our favorite restaurants in CS. Our *last* time there, the service and overall experience was about as described.
I couldn't agree more with the previous comment. I've witnessed firsthand the Layton family in action and they are truly one of a kind.

Great food, but last time we went, it took over an hour to get our entree, by which time we were full and couldn't eat it. We very politely tried to tell the manager about the delay; his response was that we could just take the food home with us. Then he tried to blame our server, even though we indicated that the server had been great. After this wholly insufficient response to our unhappy customer experience, we will not be back anytime soon.
At least they actually HAD guacamole when you went. When I tried it they had no chips or guacamole. You're dead on about the horchata, that stuff was bad - gritty, even.
I don't know when you wrote this but perhaps you should have had a big ole cup of shut the f*ck up about the fire. just sayin.
Try Taste of India...terrific for all the taste bud stimulus this place fails to meet.

i don't think we were charged for chips and salsa. i would have remembered that. i do think it's DUMB! that they charge and really dumb that the waitress told you it was to pay for the rennovation. i remember our host was a kid who seemed like he didn't know what he was doing. otherwise, not memorable.
We had eaten for years at Jorges in Pueblo. It was decent. Not terrific, but decent.
Three years ago we walked in after having not been there for for a bit, and were surprised to be charged for salsa and chips. Which goes straight to the first line of the Independent Review. I knew right then something was wrong. Changing. I noted the food in Pueblo was changing at the same time. They always had top shelf beans. Something was changing, and not for the good with the beans. Salsa was getting watery. Plates that used to be satisfying were trending towards mediocre.
We then ate at the Jorge's in Colorado Springs before the rennovation. Wheels off horrible. Everything about it was just gradations worse than Pueblo. Tried it a second time in the springs to give them a chance, a few months later. Nawp. Just as bad. Actually worse because it was disappointing to see them "not getting it". Pueblo continued to go down hill too. We stopped going, after years. We stopped going after the last time when the service was botched, plates were just plain bad, and we were overcharged for To Go desserts. It was a downright bad meal, that last time. I was so fed up by this time, I wrote an email to the owners of Jorges saying we had been long time customers but the last meal was a disaster and we were not just disappointed, we were upset that we had to argue for service for a very poor meal. I never heard back. That ladies and gents is BAD FORM for a business to execute in very poor fashion to a long time customer and then not respond.
Sooooooo, now this review for the apres rennovation in Colorado Springs. Am I surprised? No. I saw this coming three years ago, the changes, the cutting corners, the dwindling service, the mediocre to bad plates. It would do no good to pick apart individual dishes because prior posters have pretty much nailed it. Forget calling it Mexican. When you have been relegated to not even being decent for TexMex, you have fallen very, very far. And Jorge's has fallen very far.
I admit I was really put out when I never received a response to a compassionate, caring customer. So after reading this review which I can only corroborate from many years of experience and then the last 3+ years of tailspin experience, well... we had a birthday dinner a week ago for a long time and very well known resident of the West Side. When we threw out where to go on the West Side to solicit a West Side restaurant, it was rather interesting to hear the group consensus virtually simultaneously say where they didn't want to go first... 'no' to Jorges.
That says something when a group of long time West Siders who want to support west side businesses refuse in that manner. You have got to be doing something very wrong. And Jorges is. I am not ever happy to see poor reviews much less give them. Especially for something that we had participated in for so long. Hence the too long review here. But the Independent review is spot on. Born out by our experience over the last three years at both restaurants. This is not a mediocre dining experience. It is downright bad. How they could have fallen so far is beyond me after being reasonably good for years. Youth? Inexperience? Growth and greed... oh yeah, the prices are NOT in line, not even close, for the food? Way overpriced.
The short of it is finally, I would not take my family there and as it turns out, we didn't for an important birthday celebration. I would like to find something redeeming, just like the reviewer for the Independent, but the review could almost be word for word how dismal Jorges has become. Because the fall from grace has been so far, I am not sure what if anything would get me to go back to Jorges again. And trust me... we gave them multiple opportunities to return to grace.
I'm so happy you told the honest truth. I will not go back to that noisy crap shute. My husband was sick for a week. It took an HOUR to get our check (the manager had to find our server and did not even apologize). Our plates were bland and tasted like old, cheap, re-heated cheese. Because that was what coated everything. I vote for Amanda's Fonda and Salsa Brava.
No offense Christina but I spend a lot of time in ABQ and I find the food pretty weak.
Mexican in ABQ is mostly New Mexican and is very similar from place to place. I have had little luck getting high end food in ABQ/Rio Rancho area. Of course COS you really need to know where to go also.
I agree some ratings especially on the MX restaurants here are lousy. I think you have to go to a hole in the wall say off of Platte to find closer to the real thing. La Carreta usually fits that bill although they can have an off day and I have not been there i a while.
How Muldoon's is up there shows folks don't know what good food is.
I was going to open a restaurant in this town but I think it would have to be in the Broadmoor area. A lot of folks either don't want to pay for good food or don't know what it is. That includes service, too. Getting my salad with my entree makes me want to go ballistic but I guess some folks are okay with that.
