Remembering Stephen Hawking and his quantum take on the World Cup

The outpouring of emotion in the hours since Stephen Hawking’s death has once more demonstrated the profound influence of this generation’s most important philosopher and physicist.

But as we ponder his vast accomplishments, it’s also worth remembering Hawking's endearingly droll sense of humor, which was nearly as boundless as the universe he envisioned.

As one small example, we looked through the Indy archive and found this 2014 blog entitled "Stephen Hawking, the World Cup, and the power of Oi!," which includes the scientist’s observation that, when it comes to penalty kicks, "England couldn't hit a cow's arse with a banjo."
