Roller derby is about much more than Ellen Page and tough girls skating. Rooted in athleticism, community and empowerment, derby provides an outlet to a great many women across the country, including right here in Colorado Springs. The Pikes Peak Derby Dames, our region’s ever-growing roller derby group, host an annual fundraiser and celebration to keep them skating. This year’s theme is rockabilly, and they’re hosting a black-and-blue ball with an open invitation. Dress in your rockabilly or derby best, and enjoy giveaway prizes, plenty of dancing, and the opportunity to meet such local derby all-stars as Brass Moose Knuckles, Ringo Skarr and Pepper Slay (gotta love them derby names).
