On April 11, President Donald Trump signed two controversial bills into law. The Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act and the Allow States and Victims to Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act were meant to make it easier to fight sex trafficking by, among other things, holding online advertising services accountable for their content. Surface-level, that doesn’t sound too bad, but since Backpage.com was seized by federal authorities and both Craigslist and Reddit have shut down their personals pages, sex workers who have entered the business willingly have found their primary means of advertisement, safety and community compromised. To rally against these laws and their effect on consensual sex workers, local artists Jasmine Dillavou and Camille Murdock have created a unique performance art piece/protest that they call a “mash-up of femme myths, tales, fables and real accounts from sex workers.” In addition to the performance, there will be an installation art piece, information about how to get involved, plus refreshments and zines sold by GLO, a local meetup group for women of color. Warning, the show will be explicit; these artists aren’t shy.
