Thomas Hoving dies

Posted By on Fri, Dec 11, 2009 at 1:17 PM

Renowned arts figure Hoving has died from lung cancer at age 78. Hoving is known for revamping the Metropolitan Museum of Art during the early 70's, then working as an arts correspondent, magazine editor and author. Hoving was considered by many to be a pioneer of the crowd-pleasing blockbuster exhibition in museums, due in part to his maneuvering to bring artifacts from the tomb of Tutankhamun to the United States for the first time. His death comes weeks after the passing of another giant in the contemporary arts world, Jeanne-Claude, who with husband and partner Christo, has created monumental environmental art pieces for decades.

Hoving spoke at the Fine Arts Center two years ago during its grand reopening festivities.
