Bode Miller has won the bronze medal in the Winter Olympics men's downhill with a run that was just 9/100ths of a second away from gold.

Miller, the mercurial American skier with a checkered and controversial past, attacked Whistler Mountain with no inhibition this morning, blitzing to the bottom in 1 minute, 54.40 seconds to take the lead, but two Europeans barely passed him in later runs.

Miller wound up third, with Didier Defago of Switzerland winning in 1:54.31, followed by A.L. Svindal of Norway in 1:54.38.

Side-by-side comparisons of the medalists' runs showed that Miller was slightly faster for most of the run, but lost the gold in the final portion.

Two other Americans, Steven Nyman and Andrew Weibrecht, finished 20th and 21st, respectively.
