Whoever believes lying doesn't get you anywhere has never met John Gardner.

As a state and county employee, John Gardner apparently fudged the truth on at least two job applications and in court testimony about having a college degree from Montana State University. (Read the Indy's 2008 story about Gardner here.)

That's serious stuff, right? You might think it would get Gardner fired from his job as information systems manager at the clerk and recorder's office, or at least held in an employment limbo.

Well, maybe not. Turns out Gardner has just become Clerk Bob Balink's chief deputy, making him the no. 2 person in the office.

In fairness, he wasn't really promoted to the new position. He was already the assistant chief deputy, and his boss, Terry Sholdt, just retired after working in the clerk's office more than 35 years.
