Did someone say Salad CSA?

Posted By on Tue, Mar 2, 2010 at 1:27 PM

It's that time again, where I blog about a handful of notable food news that won't fit into this week's Side Dish. Get used to it ... I have a feeling this might be a consistent segment.

First up: News from my Pikes Peak Urban Gardens (PPUG) board meeting yesterday. As the growing season begins (time to get your indoor starts going), PPUG has been approved to take over growing operations at the two large Colorado Springs City Government greenhouses below Colorado College in Monument Valley Park (224 Mesa Road). Director Larry Stebbins says it will become a year-round operation around March 15, producing salad greens, herbs, tomatoes and sprouts. It's a possible that a unique Salad CSA might grow from the project — I'll keep you posted. Also, look for a new pick 'n pay from 9 a.m. to noon, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays this summer at PPUG's Harlan Wolfe Ranch Demo Garden on Cheyenne Road and Ninth Street (on the west side of the road).

Second: We heard last week that our local Pita Pit outfits had gone down — one at 8 E. Bijou St. downtown and the other at 773 W. Garden of the Gods Road. We tried to reach the owner for comment (and held off print last week waiting ...) to no avail. Sorry to see the late-night dining option go, but — not to be insensitive — the Springs is saturated with falafel spots, so those faithful to the item shouldn't be totally bummed.

Lastly: You've probably heard the KRCC spots by now or noticed the ad in our paper last week, but if not: Rico's Café is now serving weekday breakfasts starting at 7:30 a.m., featuring quiche, muffins, yogurt with fruit and granola, smoothies and something called Nest-Egg Timbales (whole-wheat pie crust filled with scrambled eggs, potatoes, cheese and an option of 28 veggies and meats starting at $2.25).
