What would you do with $2.6 million?

Posted By on Fri, Mar 19, 2010 at 12:30 PM

Last year, I followed in the steps of a couple of my co-workers and switched my phone service to CREDO Mobile from AT&T. Though the rates were comparable and I hadn't had any major trouble with AT&T, I made the move because I was allured by CREDO's activism in raising money for global nonprofits.

Simply by having the service, a portion of your monthly bill goes toward a major annual payout. The cool part is, as a member, you can vote on your favorite progressive organizations to determine who gets what.

I just got an e-mail with the 2009 Donations Distribution Report attached, breaking down the payouts from a $2,680,211 pool.

In case you're feeling too apathetic to click the above link, here's just a few of the disbursements inside the five categories (Environment, Civil Rights, Economic and Social Justice, Peace and International Freedom, Voting Rights & Civic Participation):

$82,285 Defenders of Wildlife
$67,734 Rainforest Action Network
$58,545 Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network
$108,783 Planned Parenthood (affiliates)
$47,057 Center for Investigative Reporting
$57,166 Global Fund for Women
$70,185 Oxfam America
$46,750 Color of Change
$25,307 Democracia U.S.A.
$39,092 Engineers Without Borders

Since 1985, CREDO has raised $65 million for annually-changing nonprofits. Click here to see a list of 2010 donation recipients.
