And the mood in the Legislature is... conflicted

Posted By on Mon, Apr 12, 2010 at 5:00 PM

Two days ago, the Denver Post ran a story under the headline, "'Ashamed' senators pass Colorado budget."

According to the article, the mood in the capitol was grim because everyone was feeling lousy about the budget they just passed.

Guess things must have cheered up considerably because today, the top headline in the Gazette, under the header Colorado Legislature was ... "Both Sides Pleased With Session So Far."

Huh. Boy, oh boy, those politicians sure are a moody bunch. The whole lot of them are apparently "ashamed" and "pleased" at virtually the same time. (Incidentally, I once had an annoying dog who could pull off that same emotional combo.)

Anyway, according to the Gazette article the Democrats are all very pleased with their accomplishments, and the Republicans are pleased because the Democrats raised taxes, which the Republicans think they can play to their favor in the election. (Never mind that taxes were NOT raised, because the Legislature has NO POWER to raise taxes under TABOR. And, in fact, what did happen was some tax exemptions were removed, and some industries that had been enjoying a big loophole suddenly had to pay up like everyone else, but anyway...)
